Shingal-Duhok Main Road Due to be Reopened Soon

The district commissioner of Shingal, predominantly populated by Ezidis announced that the main road connecting the town to the Kurdistan Region is scheduled to reopen by the end of this month.

The road which has been closed since October 16, 2017 following the return of Iraqi army forces to disputed territories between Mosul and the Kurdistan Region.

Fahad Hamid said “bilateral talks between Kurdistan Region and Iraqi government officials has started to address the problem, and an agreement has been reached to reopen it before the end of September”.

Last June both sides agreed to reopen the roads between Mosul and Kurdistan Region to facilitate the return of hundreds of thousands of displaced families who fled Mosul in the wake of ISIS attack in 2014.

In the meantime, Haidar Shasho, commander of the Ezidkhan Protection forces said ‘ the main road between Kurdistan Region will not reopen soon”,  noting that the Iraqi government has not agreed yet.
