Iraqi security forces have stormed the office of the Kurdistan Teachers Union (KTU)-Kirkuk branch several times, asking them to evacuate the building, which they say belongs to the Iraqi Teachers Union.

Hasiba Abdulla, head of the (KTU) in Kirkuk told KirkukNow that “Iraqi counter-terrorism units have asked us to evacuate the building at the direct order of Kirkuk acting governor Rakan al-Jiburi, but we refused to comply”.

The building which currently houses the (KTU) belonged to the Iraqi Teachers Union until the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003.

The head of the (KTU) insists that they will not evacuate the building arguing that it “belongs to all the teachers in Kirkuk”.
