Bahar Salih, 43, is a working woman who has been providing for her family for 8 years. She bakes traditional Kurdish bread at Khaje Khanim bakery store.

Bahar, a mother of a 22-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter used to live in neighboring Iran, but her husband’s financial problems and debts compelled them to move to the Kurdistan Region.

Despite poverty, she has also undertaken the responsibility of raising her brother’s child after he suffered mental problems.

“I love my job. When I am at home, I miss my workplace because I feel very comfortable with the people I work with here”, she told (KirkukNow).

Bahar has to walk for nearly an hour to get to the bakery since her daily payment does not cover transportation expenses.

She is paid 20 thousand Iraqi dinars ( US$ 16) per day; half of it goes to the nursery, where she leaves her two little children.

“This job is like a daily exercise for me. It is a big relief for me. Above all it has given me the opportunity to help my husband.”
