Kirkuk Governor Nejmadin Karim said Hadi al-Amri, Minister of the Iraqi Ministry of Transportation (MoT) would visit Kirkuk to check on the plans for building a civilian airport here.

Karim said, “The MoT minister has promised to visit Kirkuk in order to accelerate the process of building a civilian airport and developing the transportation sector in Kirkuk.”  The Kirkuk governor met with the MoT minister last month in Baghdad to discuss the possibility of building a civilian airport.

It was decided that the civilian airport is to replace the current Huriya (Azadi) airport which was used from 2003 to November of 2011 as a US troops base.  “The Kirkuk administration will start forming an expert committee from relevant directorates and the Kirkuk Provincial Council (KPC) to start the project,” according to Kirkuk’s governor.

The KPC unanimously decided to change the Hurriya airport to a civilian airport in November of 2011 and hand its control over to the security forces of the province.
