Two-thirds of marriages end up in divorce

According to Kirkuk Court statistics, 2,113 divorces have been reported while 3,223 marriages were performed in the past six months, which accounts for two- thirds of all the marriages.

The data mentions an increase in marriages and divorce processes, while there were only 636 divorce processes, and the marriages totaled 3,363.

Amjad Muhamad attributed the issue to the fast decision making in the marriage process, saying that “Our youths think marriage is only wearing the bride and groom costumes.”

He added, “The cases are mostly a misunderstanding, bad usage of the internet and communication process and its effects on the society.”

Naznaz Omer, a social researcher said, “This is a dangerous alert, the media and women’s organizations should act on their role in this process.”  She added, “The media should make conferences on such a subject to investigate the cases and find a solution.”

She said one of the reasons is under age marriage, where the couples marry each other sooner than they should.

Rezhin Omer, 20, is an engaged student studying Fine Arts, who is to be married to a boy in two months.  Her fiancé told her that they should separate, “I asked my fiancé to give me his Facebook password, but he said we should separate.”

The court has given them six months permission to show regret, “But he’s insisting on his decision,” she said.
