Two reports from Kirkuknow won the first and the third prizes at a press competition in Kalar city which addressed human rights abuses in 2017.
The competition committee selected three reports out of tens of reports that addressed human rights issues in 2017 and the prizes were awarded to the journalists on Thursday, December 14.
In the competition, 36 journalists from 18 media outlets and. The jury considered 34 reports seven of which were from Kirkuknow.
The first prize was awarded to a report titled “The Morning Komari Neighbourhood Fell, Killing and Human Rights Abuses in the battle for Tuz Khormatu”, by Kirkuknow journalists Zhino Khalil, Ali Mahmoud and Layla Ahmad.
The third prize went to another report by Kirkuknow reporter Karwan Salehi titled “Children of Isis: stuck in legal limbo”.
The second prize went to Kurdistan24 journalist Karwan Rahman whose report dealt with the plight of a 10 year old girl who was forced into marriage.
The competition was organised by Deng Radio, an independent radio in Kalar city, supported by the US National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
Kirkuknow is a web based independent outlet which covers the territories disputed between Baghdad and Erbil. Kirkuknow mission is to promote peaceful coexistence in the disputed territories and to provide reliable source of news for the residents of these areas.
