The security forces of Sulaimaniyah, called Asaiysh did not allow the event of the 10th event of Soran Mama Hama prize for Freedom of Journalism to take place in its original location in Mam u Zin hall, asked people to leave the street, and attacked a cameraman.
The annual event, where some journalists are awarded and recognised, was supposed to take place at 17:30 in Sarchnar’s Mam u Zin hall, Sulaimaniyah, as preparations were made to that purpose.
On the same day, Asayish called the event organisers, telling them they cannot hold the ceremony, said Ahmed Mira, editor in chief of Levin magazine and the organiser of the event, “because of the security situation”. Mira considered the reason a mere “pretext” as he did not see any real concerns.
However, Asayish did not allow them as promised, “We went to the street in front of the hall and held the event. When we finished, the Asayish made us leave the place and attacked a cameraman from Payam TV,” Mira said.
KirkukNow witnessed the attack made on the local cameraman by the security officers.
The event was also to commemorate the assassination of Soran Mama Hama. Mama Hama was assassinated when he was 21, working with Levin magazine on 21 July 2008, and the legal case into his assassination is still open, while no one has been arrested.
Mama Hama’s brother, Hiwa, called on the security forces to give a clarification concerning the obstacles, “What kind of a threat does it make on the city’s security,” he asked.
The security forces are yet to respond to Mama Hama’s brother, or KirkukNow attempts in this regard.
