Who we are

KirkukNow is an Independent electronic news website publishes stories and events taking place within or relevant to Iraq’s disputed territories, as defined in the Iraqi constitution, with the aim of promoting coexistence in those areas and providing easy access to information.

 

In April 2011, www.kirkuknow.com was launched as an online news agency, the only independent media outlet that covers developments throughout the disputed territories in Iraq in the three main languages of these areas - Arabic, Kurdish and Turkmen- as well as in English.

 

The goal of the website is to publish news for all the people in Kirkuk and for everyone who is interested in unbiased news and information about the disputed territories and since they are disputed areas between the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government and it is home for Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen, Chaldean Assyrians, Sunni, Shia, Christians and other minorities. Any event these areas as a disputed area will both positively or negatively affect the rest of the country, so an independent, unbiased media will asset the process of nation building, stability and coexistence among the different ethnic groups in these areas.

Our mission is to inform and engage communities of the disputed territories in Iraq. 

 

Objectives:

First: Endeavor to establish a new media model void of any political, ideological, religious, sectarian, ethnic, and racist agenda.

Second: Endeavor to ensure the freedom of access to information and analyze the events and developments from a professional point of views.

Third: Promote peaceful coexistence among the target audience of KirkukNow, through our media message.

Fourth: Observe the transparency and consolidate the pillars of media professionalism and ethical conducts for the press.

Fifth: Expand media coverage in the disputed territories.

Sixth: Endeavor to develop the role of online journalism in the disputed areas.

Seventh: KirkukNow serves as a platform for the underprivileged groups of the disputed territories, such as, women, refugees and IDPs, and people with special needs.

 

Code of Ethics:  

First: KirkukNow adheres to the journalistic values of fairness, accuracy, objectivity, honesty, impartiality and independence which are preconditions for the publication of any story.

Second: Freedom of the press and unveiling the truth are considered as core principles of KirkukNow.

Third: KirkukNow abides by the applicable laws and they keep the secrecy of their journalistic profession. Moreover, we show high respect to the private life and reputation of individuals.

Fourth: KirkukNow avoids publishing fabricated, fake and baseless stories.

Fifth: KirkukNow acknowledges mistakes, post correction and apology for any incorrect information we publish.

Sixth: Endeavour to refrain from provoking sectarian, ethnic and/or racist conflicts.

Seventh: Respect ethnic, religious and cultural diversity and the symbols of the components of the disputed territories.

Eighth: KirkukNow abides by publishing those articles which become a tool to boost coexistence among the components of the disputed territories.

Ninth: KirkukNow must not misuse and publish the goodwill of any individuals, parties and institutions. Meanwhile, KirkukNow and its freelancers protect the names of those special sources that provide them with information.

Tenth: KirkukNow refrains from disclosing names and photos of suspects or naming victims as “criminals” unless they are convicted by an independent court.

Eleventh: KirkukNow must not engage in publishing photos and audiotape of individual privacies without prior notice and written permission, on the condition that such publication must not contradict the content of KirkukNow’s code of ethics.   

Twelfth: KirkukNow journalists must reveal their real identities while performing their journalistic duty. Copyright of the materials they obtain during reporting is reserved to KirkukNow and they are not allowed to pass it over to other media outlets.
