Shamy, symbol of persistence
Shamy Nayif, 25, makes family table by her bakery, a male-dominant business
By Ammar Aziz in Duhok

My name is Shamy Nayif and I am 25. I am mother of tow sons. My husband is incapable to work so I have to make the living of my family.

We have been displaced seven years ago. The idea of the bakery came to my mind so I decided it to build one in Sharia IDP camp in Duhok.

I work from six am up to 8 pm with two girls. It was not easy to lay foundation for such a business but thank God it’s a success now.

We prepare 250-300 breads a day, small and big per the demands of the customers. I supervise everything. The most important point in our service is tidiness, a boost for my business.

One of my sons is only eight and the other is seven and both attend school. I want them to get a degree o that they can impoverished life and misery alike mine.

I am under stress but still pleased to be the breadwinner for my family. I make about 350,000-400,000 Iraqi Dinars ($270) and I am proud to generate job opportunity for two young girls.
