Adil has a burdensome life yet filled with gratitude

My name is Adil Muhammad. I’m 34. I have been working as a cobbler and shoe shiner in Kirkuk since I was 7. I mend and polish shoes.

My work on Kirkuk’s Komari Street starts every day from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. I sometimes go with my bike to mend shoes for people at their homes.

I bring most of my tools from Baghdad or Erbil. I am an Arab, but the long years I spent in my job and my daily interaction with the different ethnicities of the city helped me to learn the languages of the diverse communities here. The majority of my customers are Kurds.

Although this is an exhausting job, I am very satisfied with it because it has enabled me to provide for my family.

I couldn’t finish school but I am trying my best to help my children get a proper education and serve their country.
