Ali Elias appointed ‘Baba Shékh’ of the Ezidis

Ali Elias was appointed as ‘Baba Shékh,’ the position of spiritual leader of Ezidis, at a meeting held this morning in the city of Dohuk, with the presence of prominent Ezidi figures.

Jawhar Ali, a deputy of the Mir of the Ezidis, told KirkukNow: “With the presence of the Mir of the Ezidis, members of the Spiritual Council, and a large number of Ezidi men, choosing Ali Elias for the position of Baba Shékh of the Ezidis was agreed on to succeed the [late] ever-living Shékh Khurto haji-Ismail.”

Jawhar Ali added that the meeting was in the hall of the cultural centre of the University of Duhok, and the official ceremony for the appointment will take place next Wednesday.

Ali Elias was born in 1979 in Shékhan district, Nineveh province.

The position of ‘Baba Shékh’ is the highest religious position for Ezidis.
