The militants who clashed with a force affiliated with the Iraqi National Security Service were wanted under the anti-terrorism law and are not drug dealers, the Kirkuk police spokesman, revealed.
At 7 am today, Wednesday, September 11, a force affiliated with the Iraqi National Security Service raided a house in the Sekanian neighborhood in Kirkuk city and clashed with two militants.
The clashes resulted in the death of one of the militants and the arrest of the other, who was injured, according to Brigadier Amer Shiwani, the Kirkuk police spokesman.
"At first, we thought they were drug dealers, but it turned out they were wanted under the terrorism prosecution law," said Brigadier Shiwani.
A KirkukNow correspondent confirmed from the scene that a National Security Service force had arrived in the Sekanian neighborhood and that the clashes had ended, noting that three National Security personnel were injured.
According to the police spokesman, the injuries to the National Security personnel were minor.
The Sekanian neighborhood is located northeast of Kirkuk city on the Kirkuk and Erbil highway.
"In addition to the National Security Forces, other forces participated in the operation," said Brigadier Shiwani.
The northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk, located 238 kilometers north of Baghdad, is an ethnically mixed province with 1.7 million Kurds, Sunni and Shiite Arabs, and Turkmen. It has long been at the center of disputed territories between Baghdad and Erbil.
