Five members of the local police and a civilian were killed, while four others were injured in two separate incidents in Diyala .
The first incident occurred on Thursday, October 10th, 2019 in Mandali a sub-district northeast of the province.
According to sources, a police officer was gunned down by a sniper at a security checkpoint in Mandali’s Qaraloos village. The source added that a brother of the victim was also shot dead at the same spot after arriving at the scene with other family members.
Azad Shafiq, head of Mandali’s sub-district council indicated that following the incident “a police force headed to the area, but their convoy was hit by a roadside bomb which left four policemen dead, among them a high ranking officer.”
“Four other people were also injured in Thursday’s attacks, some of them sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a hospital in Baquba,” he added.
Last week, a police officer was killed and a number of Iraqi soldiers were injured in sniper ambushes.
Mandali, 93 km northeast of Baquba, the provincial capital of Diyala is a disputed territory claimed both by the Iraqi federal government and the Kurdistan regional government.
The sub-district is inhabited by a mixed make-up of Arabs, Kurds and Turkmens.
