Two people were killed and four were injured when a lift collapsed in Mosul military hospital, Nineveh Civil defense said on Sunday.

“The lift is basic and renovated. It is under construction but incompatible to safety and security guidelines of civil defense,” Civil defense of Mosul said in its preliminary report. “It is not a passenger elevator.”

The hospital is located in the right part of Mosul. Manager of the hospital is among the injured. Civil defense has launched an investigation to find out reasons behind the fall of the elevator. Mosul civil defense says it has not been consulted pre installation, during test and post operation.

“It is not a passenger elevator.”

Nineveh Health Directorate mourned the “tragic event of elevator collapse resulted in death of Khalid Younes, chief engineer, and Khalid Abdullrazaq, senior paramedic.”

The injured are hospital director, a chief engineer, a senior nurse and the construction contractor whom were in charge of the elevator installation.

Nineveh has witnessed 3,594 fire evets in 2020 ranking the second city in Iraq, according to civil defense data. Mosul civil defense as all other government institutions has lost most of its material and human resources in the war for recapture of the city by US-led international coalition against ISIS.

The northern Iraqi city of Mosul, center of Nineveh Province, was captured by the Islamic State ISIS group in 2014. Much of its infrastructure and cultural heritage was destroyed during the occupation. Four years after its liberation, war-torn Mosul is now being rebuilt.
