In conjunction with the approaching date of the provincial elections in Iraq, the Kurdistan Democratic Party KDP intends to reopen the headquarters of the party's organizations office in the city of Mosul and return all its branches to the province of Nineveh.
Saydo Chato Shingali, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party's organizations office in Nineveh, said in a statement he made to the party's official website, "The Kurdistan Democratic Party has completed arrangements related to reopening the headquarters of its organizations' office in Mosul, and it will officially open in the next few days, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party will return to Mosul."
"The Kurdistan Democratic Party has the right, like other political forces, to exercise its duties, especially in a place like Nineveh," according to Shingali.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party has a wide fan base in Nineveh Governorate. In the last parliamentary elections that were held on October 10, 2021, the party's candidates scored 136,783 votes, which enabled it to win nine parliamentary seats out of the 32 seats allocated to the governorate.
"The Kurdistan Democratic Party, since its founding until today, has a wide fan base in Nineveh Governorate in general and in the city of Mosul in particular, so Nineveh is of importance to the KDP," Shingali added.
After the events of October 16, 2017, when the Iraqi forces returned to the disputed territories and the forces of the Kurdistan Regional Government KRG withdrew, the KDP left all its headquarters in the disputed territories, including Mosul and Kirkuk, and during the parliamentary elections, the party's candidates kept returning for the purpose of campaigning, but they were prevented from doing so in some areas, and at that time they seized part of the party headquarters, the number of which, according to (KirkukNow) follow-up, reached about 100 party and security offices.
Despite this, the KDP continued in the local government of Nineveh, and its members did not withdraw from the Mosul Provincial Council, where the party had the position of head of the council, before the Iraqi provincial councils were dissolved by the Iraqi Parliament in late 2019, and currently holds the position of assistant governor of Nineveh.
"After reopening the headquarters of the party's office in Nineveh, we will reopen our other headquarters in Mosul and its outskirts, including the party branches, and we will carry out our duties," Shingali added.
The KDP's move coincides with the approaching date of the provincial council elections, to be held at the end of this year.
The Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq IHEC on July 2 opened the registration door for political parties and entities, and set the end of the month as the deadline for registration.
