KirkukNow Team to Cover Reproductive Rights, Health

Kirkuk Now Media Outlet introduced the new changes related to media work, including coverage within the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), to reporters and journalists as part of its upcoimng covergae plan.

During a thirty-day training from May 27 to 29, 2025 in Sulaimaniya, reporters and staff of KirkukNow gathered to discuss various media topics, specifically focusing on rights and reproductive health, which is part of the Masarouna program.

Masarouna is a 5-year program funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs that works with and for young people in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) so they can claim their SRHR. 

“This is the first time in the Kurdistan Region that we have seen a course on health and reproductive issues and the impact of climate change on reproduction,” said Leila, a participant who shared her thoughts on the training.

“We have learned how to cover health and reproduction in a new, professional, and more accurate way, including presenting the consequences of climate change on pregnant women scientifically. Let's work on it.”

The training agenda included discussions on (SRHR), climate change and health-related issues, changes and developments in the field of media work, especially artificial intelligence and transition to the digital environment, along with a review of working principles.

Ahmad Bala, a reporter for KirkukNow in Nineveh, expressed his satisfaction with the training, stating that the information conveyed by the trainers was excellent and that the issue of rights and reproductive health deserves close monitoring.

“We hope these trainings will continue to highlight issues of great importance to society,” he said.

Last April, KirkukNow held another training for journalists from various media outlets on reproductive rights and health and the consequences of climate change.

The Masarouna project, in which KirkukNow is a key partner, is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the national strategy for family planning in Iraq, preparing genuine stories, and following up on reproductive rights and health services, infographics, informative videos, correcting misinformation, and addressing fake news.

KirkukNow is an Independent electronic news website publishes stories and events taking place within or relevant to Iraq’s disputed territories, as defined in the Iraqi constitution, with the aim of promoting coexistence in those areas and providing easy access to information.

In April 2011, www.kirkuknow.com was launched as an online news agency, the only independent media outlet that covers developments throughout the disputed territories in Arabic, Kurdish and Turkmen- as well as in English.
