Across Iraq, 22 independent candidates are seeking seats in the Iraqi parliamentary elections, with five of them competing in the provinces of Kirkuk, Nineveh, and Diyala.
According to statistics from the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq IHEC, more than 7,700 candidates are running for the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 11. Only 22 of these candidates are participating as independents, not affiliated with parties or alliances.
In Kirkuk Province, two independent candidates are participating: Hawri Radha and Ghufran al-Tamimi. They are among a total of 251 candidates competing for 13 seats, one of which is a Christian quota seat.
In Nineveh Province, there is only one independent candidate, Salwa Khalifa Abdullah, out of 1,047 candidates vying for 34 seats, eight of which are women's quota seats and three are reserved for ethnic minorities.
In Diyala Province, only two candidates are running as independents: Abdulrahman al-Jubouri and Sayed Jassim al-Hamash, out of a total of 358 candidates seeking 12 parliamentary seats.
Iraqi electoral law stipulates that single-member lists are designated as lists consisting of only one candidate. Approximately 100 independent candidates participated in the last parliamentary elections (October 2021) in Kirkuk, Nineveh, and Diyala. Across Iraq, 40 independent candidates won parliamentary seats.
