Ninewa’s provincial council on Thursday August 22, denounced Turkey’s bombardment of Iraqi territories, and demanded the federal government to pressure its Turkish counterpart to put an end to the violations.

Speaking to KirkukNow, Adhawi al-Su’aib, member of the Ninewa provincial council, said "the continued Turkish bombardment of Iraqi territories, particularly in Ninewa’s districts of Shingal (Sinjar) and Makhmour is a disrespect to Iraq’s sovereignty, especially after Iraqi PM Abdul-Mahdi demanded the cancellation of all aviation approvals for flights throughout the country unless authorized by the commander of the armed forces."

Al-Su’aib added that "the federal government is required for its part to address the situation in Shingal and deal with the presence of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) bases in the area; and at the same time it should not allow Turkey to commit these violations."

Turkey conducts frequent airstrikes against apparent PKK positions in northern Iraq.

In the meantime, the Iraqi foreign ministry has repeatedly condemned Turkish airstrikes on targets in the provinces of Ninewa, Sulaimaniyah, Erbil and Dohuk, while stressing that Iraqi territories should not be used as bases to launch attacks against neighboring countries.
