Five people were killed and several others injured in several incidents in Kirkuk Northern Province, in just a few hours.
The latest incident occurred late last night, August 4, 2022, in Domiz Circle Street, south of Kirkuk.
"A 53-year-old employee was stabbed to death in the street and four of his friends have been arrested for investigation," a source at the Domiz police station anonymously told KirkukNow.
The employee worked in the fourth unit of the Kirkuk municipality's excesses prevention department.
"He used to spend some time at night on the street with his friends who were arrested," the source added.
A woman was killed by her husband last night Saqzli village, according to another source in Kirkuk police.
"The couple had an argument, so the man shot his wife and killed her, then shot his brother-in-law and wounded him. He shot himself in front of his house and died on the way to hospital," the source said.
The injured man is in a critical condition.
"The family were displaced from Tal Afar (Ninewa). The woman was his second wife and they have five children," a witness told KirkukNow on the condition of anonymity.
Kirkuk, located 238 kilometers north of Baghdad, is an ethnically mixed province for 1.7 million Kurds, Sunni and Shiite Arabs, and Turkmen. It has long been at the center of disputed territories between Baghdad and Erbil.
In another incident, a father and son were killed in a collision between two vehicles in Shiwani subdistrict of Kirkuk province last night.
The incident occurred on the bridge of martyr Lieutenant Sherko Shuani between Shiwasur area of Shiwan subdistrict and Taqtaq district, a woman and a child were injured, the police source said.
Kirkuk is one of the main disputed territories in addition to Diyalah and Nineveh, that a three-stage process was outlined in Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution in 2005 to put an end to the disputes over these areas between the Kurdistan Region Government KRG and Federal Iraqi government dispute, through normalization, population census and a referendum on the status of the territories.
Currently, the Iraqi army, local and federal police, Brigade 61 of Special Forces along with Shiite paramilitary of Popular Mobilization Forces PMF, are under Kirkuk joint operations’ command, an umbrella for the security forces running the security of Kirkuk province.
