A number of unknown gunmen, using a variety of weapons including machine guns, launched an attack on an oil refinery in Kirkuk and clashed with the guards, according to several sources who spoke to KirkukNow.
The attack occurred late in the night of 13 September, near the village of Gurga-chaal in northern Kirkuk Province.
A source with information on the attack told KirkukNow that due to the attack and IEDs, a number of security personnel were injured and one of them later died of his injuries.
The gunmen were 8 to 10 individuals
The source added: “The gunmen were 8 to 10 individuals. They launched an attack on a guard post belonging to the Wadi Thi’ab security company, which is hired to secure the Barham refinery.”
The sources say that the gunmen are suspected to belong to ISIS.
“While one was the injured was being transferred, an IED exploded near the vehicle.”
The source added that six of the guards were injured due to the IED explosion.
“One of the injured, Himdad Swara Najmadin (28), died of his injuries after he was taken to the hospital.”
This was the second attack of the Barham refinery this year.
Iraqi security forces have announced the killing and arrest of several ISIS militants recently.
